The Mattachine Society was one of the earliest and most enduring gay rights organizations in the United States. Founded in Los Angeles in 1950 by labor organizer Harry Hay and several other leftist activists, it aimed to build community consciousness, fight police entrapment, and advocate for homosexuals as an oppressed minority.
